God gave certain rights to people that no one can take away.
What does “governments are instituted among men to secure these rights” mean?
People created the government to protect citizens rights.
What does “Governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed” mean?
The government gets their power from the people.
What does “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it” mean?
If the government does not protect the citizens rights, then the citizens can start a new government.

Giving taxes to the people without giving them representation to show their views.

Violating due process laws- no fair trial or jury.

Colonists we’re forced to give food and house to British Soldiers.

Took away self government.
What does this complaint mean?
‘Refused to assent to colonial laws’
The king refused to sign laws that the colonial leaders wrote.
What do many of the complaints in the DOI have in common?
They were violations of their natural rights, the EBOR and their ability to self govern.
What is rule of law and how is it important?
This tells us that all people have to follow the law, and makes sure that the government powers do not abuse their power.
