Path: Skin: intro Flashcards
layers of the epidermis from superficial to deep (4)
S. corneum
S. granulosum
S. Spinosum
S. basalis
what layer are the keratinocytes
S. Spinosum
What are the 3 cell types in S. Spinosum
1) Keratinocytes
2) Langerhans cells
Merkel cells- modified neural cells
What layer are the melanocytes in?
S. basale
What are the 2 layers of dermis frm superficial to deep
papillary dermis
reticular dermis
diff between papule and macule
papule = raised
define Hypergranulosis -
thickened SG (normally only a few cells thick)
define Parakeratosis -
nuclei in S. corneum (retained from S. spinosum)
define Acanthosis -
thickened epidermis
define Hyperkeratosis -
thickening of the stratum corneum (loss of “open basket weave appearance)
define Dyskeratosis-
abnormal keratinization of the squamous cells within the SS
define Acantholysis -
Acantholysis is the loss of intercellular connections, such as desmosomes, resulting in loss of cohesion between keratinocytes, seen in diseases such as pemphigus vulgaris. It is absent in bullous pemphigoid, making it useful for differential diagnosis
difference between vacuolar change and Lichenoid change
Vacuolar change - lymphocytes along layer of SB causing damage
Lichenoid change- massive infiltrationo of lymphocytes
define Hydropic change, and where it occurs -
edema between and within cells. (inter- and intra-cellular)
define a lentiginous lesion
hyperplasia of melanocytes which is linear in its spread and stays in the stratum basale
