Passage Planning Flashcards
What are the four stages of passage planning?
APEM
Appraisal
Planning
Execution
Monitoring
What do you consider in the Appraisal section of passage planning?
- Collect and assess all relevant info required for the passage
- allows risks to be identified and assessed to make sure the proposed passage plan is safe
- 1 or two months prior to plan
What do you do in the Planning Stage of passage planning?
- Develop and approve a passsage plan based on the outcome of the appraisal of all relevant information
What do you do in the Execution stage of passage planning?
- Briefing the bridge team on the passage plan and navigating the ship in accordance with the passage plan
What do you consider in the Monitoring stage of passage planning?
- Continuously checking the progress of the ship against the passage plan
- PI’s and position fixing methods
- MGN 315
- What you do in the bridge while underway
You can break down Appraisal into 4 sections, what are they?
- Navigation
- General/Operation
- Environmental
- Contingency
What are the factors to consider when planning the Navigation section of a passage plan?
- Pilotage requirements
- Available sea room + traffic density
- Position fixing methods
- Weather routeing
- Draught, Air draught + UKC requirements
- Reporting measures
- Reliability of propulsion and steering systems
- Anchoring and contingency options
What are 6 General/Operational factors to consider when passage planning?
- Berthing requirements
- Mooring and tug operations
- Bridge Manning
- Helicopter Operations
- Port entry requirements
- Security and anti-piracy measures
What are the Environmental factors to consider when passage planning?
- Emission control areas
- MARPOL special areas
- Garbage disposal
- Port reception facilities
What are the Contingency factors to consider when passage planning?
- Emergency response plans
- Notifications and reporting
- Passage plan amendments
What information should you consider in the Ocean Phase of passage planning?
- Anticipated waypoint arrival times
- Cross track distance (XTD)
- Identification of navigational hazards
- Leg distances
- Planned track with true course
- Safety depth and safety contours
What information should you consider in the Coastal Phase of passage planning?
- Clearing bearings
- Conspicuous charted features for position fixing
- No-go areas
- Routing and reporting requirements
- Safe water
- Tidal height and stream information
- Decision points for critical manoeuvres
- Contingency plans for anchoring
What considerations should be made when passage planning in ocean waters?
- Ocean routing charts showing currents, winds, ice limits and load lines
- Weather routeing service
- Gnomonic projection charts for plotting great circle routes
What considerations should be made when passage planning in coastal waters?
- Passing charted objects at a safe distance
- Advice in sailing directions
- Available depth of water
- Visual and radar fixing opportunities
- Reporting measures
- Allowances made for increased draught du to squat in shallow water
What considerations should be made when passage planning in pilotage waters?
- Check if a pilot is required
- Recommended routes
- Boarding a pilot procedures
- Local conditions, rules and restrictions on navigation
- Berthing and tug operations
- Contingency planning
