Define compliance
Extent to which a patient complies with medical advice
Define adherence
The extent to which a person’s behaviour corresponds with agreed recommendations with a healthcare provider
Define concordance
An agreement reached after negotiation between a patient + a healthcare professional that respects the beliefs + wishes of a patient
What in involved in no adherence to medication?
- failing to pick up prescription
- stopping taking meds before course is complete
- taking more or less meds at the wrong time/missing dose than prescribing or at the wrong time
What are the consequences of non adherence?
- Loss of health benefits > increased hospitalisation
- Wider economic burden
Define unintentional adherence
Patients want to take medications but are prevented by barriers outside their control e.g. financial reasons
Define intentional adherence
Patient decided not to follow treatment regime, based on beliefs attitudes + experiences
Due to lay beliefs
Ways to improve unintentional adherence
- Educating patient
- simplifying regime
- make it easier to remember to use medicine
Approaches on providing good healthcare to the homeless
- provide a ‘safe house’ with GP on duty
- vaccinations
- pharmacological intervention
