Cases are selected, then controls are selected to each case
Case - those with event + outcome
Control - those with no event or outcome

Advantages of case control studies
A
Inexpensive
Efficient when even is rare or conditions take long time to develop
Smaller sample size
Allows studying multiple exposures

A
Cannot determine incidence + prevalence
Not suitable for rare exposures
Selection bias
