Parts Of The Brain Flashcards
The endocrine system
Delivers horomones & maintains body homeostasis
What are the 2 sub devisions of the periferal nervous system?
- somatic nervous system
- autonomic nervous system
Somatic nervous system:
Consists of nervs that controll muscles
Autonomic nervous system consists of what?
- sympathetic nervous system
- parasympathetic nervous system
Sympathetic nervous system
Generates arousal
Parasympathetic nervous system
Maintains body balence when there is no need to respond to threat
Parts of the brain (3)
Right/ left hemisphere
The hind brain
Parts of the hind brain (5)
Mid brain Pons Cerebellum Medula Spinal chord
Medula:
Regulates breathing/heart rate/sneezing/salavating/ vomiting
Pons:
Sleep cycle/balance/eye movements/swallowing
Carebellum:
Movements/balance/emotion/attension
Parts of mid brain:
Superior colliculus: orienting responce to visuala
Interior colliculus: sound stimulous
The forebrain:
Waste removal& nutrient providing functions (ceribral spinal fluids)
Basil ganglia:
Movements and reward system of the brain
Nucleus accumbens:
Works inside the basil ganglia to generate pleasure experience
Whats in the limbic system? (3)
Amigdala/hippocampus/hypothalamus
Amigdala:
Creation of memory for emotional experiences & processes emotion
Hippocampus
Key for creating new memories. Damage to area can cause amnesia
Hypothalamas
Regulates body temp. Coordinate biological drives (sex/aggression) by controlling the release of hormones by pytuitary gland (responcible for orgasm)
Whats in the Cerebral cortex (2)
Occipital lobe/perietal lobe
Occipital lobes
Early processing of visuals (primary visual cortex)
Perietal lobe
Recieves info about visuals from occipital lobes (provides us witu visually guided action)
Somatosensary cortex
Controlls sense of touch
