parts of the brain Flashcards
BRAINSTEM
primitive inner core made up of the medulla, pons, and reticular formation
Cerebellum
behind the brainstem. plays a role in learning, memory, coordination, and muscle movements
basal ganglia
large masses of gray matter involved with coordination of slower more deliberate movements
LIMBIC SYSTEM
plays a role in regulation of movement, emotion, and memory
Thalamus
sensory relay station. directs neural traffic between senses and cerebral cortex
Amygdala
trauma is linked to this (fight or flight). learning, memory, and emotions
hippocampus
formation of new memories
hypothalamus
regulates the body, emotions, and drives. regulates body temperature and autonomic services (like heartbeat). triggers the release of hormones into your bloodstream. responsible for fear, rage, hunger, thirst
CEREBRAL CORTEX
outermost layer
four lobes
- temporal
- frontal
- occipital
- parietal
Language areas
Broca’s and Wernicke’s
Broca’s
located in left hemisphere. directs muscle movement in the production and comprehension of speech
Wernicke’s
left hemisphere. comprehension of language
split brain (separation of the two hemispheres) research
suggests that the left hemisphere processes more analytical info and right hemisphere processes info in a more global, holistic way
plasticity
the capacity to change as a result of usage, practice, and exposure
