awareness of the sensations, thoughts, and feelings that one is attending to at any given moment
selective attention
cocktail party phenomenon - the ability to focus awareness selectively to one persons speech in the midst of competing conversations
Divided attention
the ability to distribute ones attention and simultaneously engage two or more activities. filtering process that doesn’t completely block out other information
stroop test
a color naming task that demonstrates the automatic nature of highly practiced activities such as reading
Subliminal message
a stimulus that is presented below the threshold for awareness
mere exposure
the more often a stimulus is seen the greater the liking for it
priming
tendency for a recently presented word or concept to facilitate, or prime, responses in a subsequent situation
our conscious has a limited capacity
it can shift rapidly from one stimulus to another but can only shine on one stimulus at a time
