special process theories
maintain that hypnosis induces a unique state of consciousness and that people are more responsive to suggestion while under hypnosis than in other states
dissociation
a division of consciousness that permits one part of the mind to operate independently of another part
social cognitive theories
maintain that hypnosis is not a distinct physiological state and that the same phenomenon can sometimes be produced through relaxation, role playing, positive expectations, and mere suggestion without hypnotic induction
