What is a verb?
A word that shows action, links, helps, or shows existence.
What is a verb phrase?
A main verb plus one or more helping verbs.
What can verbs be called?
Transitive, intransitive, linking, or helping.
What does transitive mean?
Transitive is applied to a verb that requires a receiver to express a complete thought. (passing over)
What does intransitive mean?
Intransitive is a applied to a verb that does not require a receiving to express a complete thought.
What does linking mean?
Linking is the term applied to a verb that links a word in the predicate to the subject
Commonly used linking verbs:
Am, is, are, was, were, being, been, been, taste, feel, smell, sound, look, appear, become, seen, grow, remain, stay.
What does helping mean?
Helping is a term applied to a verb that helps the main verb make a statement.
What is a noun?
person, place, thing, or idea.
What is a common noun?
Names a person, place, thing, or idea but does not say which particular one.
What is a proper noun?
Names a particular person, place, thing, or idea.
What is a concrete noun?
A noun that exist as a physical or material substance.
What is an abstract noun?
A noun that names a quality, state, activity, or general idea.
What is a collective noun?
A singular noun that talks about multiple items
What is a substantive?
Another term that may be used to refer ti any word, phrase, or clause that functions as a noun or as a noun equivalent.
