Parts Of Respiratory System Flashcards
Pharynx
Aka- throat
Air passes through here
Larynx
Aka- voice box
Air passes through here
Trachea
Carries air to and from lungs
Lined with mucous layer and cells with cilia
Rings of cartilage to hold shape
Ribs
Forms framework of chest
Protects heart
Intercostal muscles
Moves ribs upwards and outward during inspiration to increase long volume
Contract and relax during ventilation
Epiglottis
Flap of tissue which closes of trachea when swallowing so no food or liquid enters lungs
Bronchi
Branch from trachea guiding air into each lung
Bronchioles
Very fine tubules on the end of the bronchi
Smooth muscle walls
End with alveoli
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs lined with capillaries for the exchange of gas between air and blood
Make up most of lung
Lungs
Occupy chest cavity
Made of elastic- like muscle to increase/ decrease lung volume during ventilation
Covered by pleural membrane
Pleural fluid fills pleural membranes
Diaphragm
Muscle separating abdomen and chest cavity
Contacts and flattens during inhalation to increase lung volume and allow air to flow into lungs
Relaxes and arches into chest cavity during exhalation decreasing lung volume and causing air to floe out of lungs
Nasal cavity
Filters, moistens, and warms air for lungs
Air enters through here
