Blood Vessels Flashcards
Vein
Bring blood to the Heart Thin, inelastic walls Carries blood at low pressure Allows blood to drain back to heart Valves- prevent backflow Varicas vein can develop- not elastic
Capillary
Tiny 1 cell thick
Network around each cell
Carry blood between cells
Easy diffusion
Fast/ more efficient exchange of nutrients and waste
Allow all cells to exchange waste and nutrients
Artery
Carry blood away from Heart
Thick muscular and elastic wall- expands and cater for pumping of blood
High pressure
Makes sure arteries don’t explode
Elastic wall- allow arteries to recoil to size
Blood gets to body quicker- fast delivery
Valves
Prevent backflow
Allow blood to flow in one direction
Tendinous Chord
Pull on valves to stop them from turning inside out
Connects valve to papillary muscle in wall of heart
Papillary muscle contracts- pulling tendinitis chord and therefore opening valve to allow blood to flow
Differences between artery and vein (5)
A- carries blood away from heart V- carries blood to the heart A-blood pressure increased when ventricles contract V- blood pressure is constant and low A- thick, muscular, elastic wall V- thin, inelastic, Non muscular wall A- no valves V- valves A- oxygenated blood V- deoxygenated blood
Changes of blood vessels
Artery-> arteriole -> capillary-> venule-> vein
——-oxygenated—— —deoxygenated—
