Mechanics Of Breathing Flashcards
1
Q
Expiration
A
Air goes out
Diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax
Decreases lung volume and therefore increases pressure in lungs (which is greater then that of the atmosphere) causing air to be exhaled
2
Q
Inspiration
A
Air flows into lungs
Diaphragm (flattens) and Intercostal muscles (moving upwards and outwards) contracts
Lung volume increased and pressure decreased (lower then atmospheric pressure) causing air to be inhaled
3
Q
Ventilation
A
Process by which air moves in and out of lungs
Air moves from places of high concentration to low concentration, as well from different pressures
