Parts of a Cell Flashcards
What are the 2 types of bacteria?
- Eubacteria
2. Archaebacteria
What is the most basic cell that can exist independently of other cells?
Prokaryotic Cell
Purpose of cell wall?
Separates the inside and outside of a cell
Purpose and defining characteristic of cell membrane?
Semipermiable and allows certain things in and out of the cell
Characteristics and purpose of cytoplasm
Jelly like substance rich in protein that houses tiny organs called organelles
What is the nucleoid of a cell
Condensed DNA of the cell. Contains genetic blueprints to make proteins for the cell
What are plasmids?
Circular portions of DNA not associated with the nucleoid
What is the purpose of ribosomes
To manufacture proteins for the cell
How do the ribosomes receive their instructions to make proteins?
Messenger RNA sent from the nucleoid
How do prokaryotic cells move
Flagella
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
Tubular transport Network responsible for moving proteins from one part of the cell to another and for moving proteins outside of the cell
