Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the circulatory system?
Carries oxygenated blood out of the lungs, brings its to the parts of the body that need it, and brings the deoxygenated blood back to the lungs
What is the job of the heart?
Power the circulatory system by pumping blood out of the lungs and into the body and then back to the lungs
How many chambers does the human heart posses?
4
Which ventricle posses higher pressure?
Left Ventricle
Why is the human heart located left of center?
The left ventricle is larger and more muscle dense
Why is the left ventricle muscularly denser than the right?
So to keep the pressure high enough so that the oxygenated blood will leave
Where does the oxygenated blood travel next after leaving the left ventricle?
Through the Aorta
What is the Aorta?
Main artery of the heart which extends from left chamber down through the chest and abdomin into the pelvic groin area
Where does the oxygenated blood travel to after leaving the aorta?
Through smaller arteries
What is the purpose of an artery?
To carry blood away from the heart
Describe the physique of an artery and why it is as such
They are thick walled and muscular to maintain high pressure as the blood travels along
Where does the blood travel through next after the artery?
Through the smaller arterioles
Where does the blood travel through after the arterioles?
Into the capillary beds
What are two purposes of the capillary beds?
- Facilitate oxygen delivery to cells in the body that need it
- Pick up carbon dioxide
Where does the blood travel to after the capillary beds?
It travels through a series of veins
What is the purpose of the veins?
To carry deoxygenated blood back towards the heart
Describe the network of veins
Little veins flow together to make bigger veins
Describe the physique of veins and
Thin walls and have valves which prevent reverse flow up the pressu gradient
Why are reverse flow valves necessary in vein structures?
The pressure gradient in the circulartory system steadaly reduces further down the line
Where does the blood travel to after flowing through progressively larger veins?
Into 2 major veins: Inferior vena cava, Superior vena cava
Purpose of the Inferior and Superior vena cavas
To route deoxygenated blood from the lower and upper parts of the body, respectively
What is the point of lowest pressure in the circulatory system?
Right atrium
Where do the two cavas merge into?
Right atrium
Deoxygenated blood in the heart flows from the right atrium and into?
Right ventricle
Deoxygenated blood leaves the right ventricle and flows into the…?
Pulmonary artery
From the pulmonary artery, blood travels into…?
The lungs
From the lungs, oxygenated blood travels into the…?
Pulmonary vein
What is an endotherm?
An organism that maintains a steady internal temperature
What are the four valves of the heart?
- Tricuspid
- Pulmanary
- Mitrol
- Aortic
Describe from beginning to end, the path of blood through the circulatory system (including arteries) from Vena Cava
- Vena Cava
- Right atrium
- Tricuspid valve
- Right ventricle
- Pulmonary valve
