A

How does Jenkins defend fan culture?

A

Defends fan culture, argues fans are often stereotyped negatively in media as they value pop culture (eg films or games) over traditional cultural capital (high brow culture or knowledge). Ironic- most fans are middle class, sot they are often seen as threat to traditional hierarchy

What is the difference between participatory culture and

consumer culture?

A

Consumer culture- audience receives text but does not interact with them. Participatory culture- audience receives and interacts with the product, with a less hierarchical producer->consumer relationship

What is ‘textual poaching’?

A

When fans take texts, re-edit or develop their meanings, process called semiotic productivity. Fan communities are also quick to criticise if they feel a text or character is developing in a way they don’t support.
