Part 2 Flashcards
Nephrons
-Structural and functional units of kidneys
-responsible for forming urine
-main structures-glomerulus and renal tubule
Glomerulus
-specialized capillary bed
-attached to arteries on both sides
-large afferent arterioles
-narrow efferent artieroles
-sits within a glomerular capsule
Renal tubule
-glomerular (bowman’s) capsule
-proximal convoluted tubule
-loop of henle
-distal convoluted tubule
Types of nephrons
-cortical nephrons
- juxtamedullary nephrons
Cortical nephrons
Located entirely in cortex
Juxtamedullary nephrons
Found at the boundary of cortex and medulla
Peritubular capillaries
-arise from efferent arteriole of the glomerulus
- normal, low pressure capillaries
- attached to a venule
- cling close to the renal tubule
-reabsorb some substances from collecting tubes
