Antiepileptic Agents

A

PURPOSE: Reduce/eliminate seizure activity. inhibit firing of cerebral neurons.

SIDE EFFECTS: ataxia, skin, heavier, gastrointestinal distress, headache, blurred vision, weight gain.

EX: seconal, Klonopin, Dilantin, Tegretol, gabapentin

Antispasticity Agents

A

Purpose: promote relaxation. bind selectively within CNS to stretch reflexors

SIDE EFFECTS: drowsiness, confusing, dizziness, weakness,

EX: baclofen, diazepam, zanaflex

Cholinergic Agents

A

PURPOSE: mimic acetylchline, bind directly to cholinergic receptor, increasing synaptic transmission.

USED: glaucoma, dementia, MG

SIDE EFFECTS: impaired vision, bronchoconstriction, bradycardia.

EX: bethanechol, pilocarpine, donepezil, tacrine

Dopamine Replacement Agents

A

PURPOSE: relieve sx of parkinson, cross blood brain barrier through active transport.

Side Effects: arrhythmias, orthostatic hypotension, dyskinesias, mood/behavior, tolerance.

EX: sinemet, Madopar (levadopa), symmetrel (amantadine)

Muscle Relaxant Agents

A

Side Effect: sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, committing, headache, tolerance, dependence.

EX: Valium (diazepam), Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine), Paraflex (chlorzoxazone)
