Equipment/Devices/Modalities Flashcards
Nasogastric Tube (NG tube)
- short term liquid feeding, med, removes gas from stomach.
Gastric Tube (common) (G tube) Jejunostomy Tube (less common) (J tube)
- long-term feeding
- presence of difficulty swallowing/avoid risk of aspiration.
Intravenous System (IV)
- sterile fluid source, a pump, a clamp, and a catheter to insert into a vein.
- superficial veins (basilica, cephalic, or antecubital)
Arterial Line
- monitoring device
- measure blood pressure, obtain blood samples.
- if displaced, apply direct pressure and get assistance
Central Venous Pressure Catheter
- measures pressures in right atrium/superior vena cava
- evaluates right ventricular function, right atrial filling pressure, and circulating blood volume
Indwelling right atrial catheter (hickman)
- inserted through cephalic or internal jugular vein.
- threaded into superior vena cava and R atrium.
- long term administration of substances (ex: chemo, total parenteral nutrition, antibiotics)
Intracranial Pressure Monitor
- measures pressure exerted against skull, placed in skull.
- types of monitors (epidural, subarachnoid, intraventricular)
Oximeter
- a photoelectric device used to determine oxygen saturation of blood.
- finger/ear
- monitor changes during exercise & position changes.
Pulmonary Artery Catheter (Swan-Ganz)
- inserted into pulmonary artery
- soft/flexible
- provides continuous measurements of pulmonary artery pressure
- avoid excessive movement of head, neck, and extremities.
Types of Oxygen Therapy (4)
- Nasal Cannula: up to 6L/min
- Oronasal Mask:
- Tent: placed over head/shoulders; higher level of O than normal.
- tracheostomy mask: placed over tracheostomy/stoma.
Arteriography (Diagnostic Test)
- injected radiopaque dye in an artery.
- Shows: Arteriosclerosis, tumors, or blockages.
Arthrography (Diagnostic Test)
- invasive test
- contrast medium provides visualization of joint structures through radiographs.
- soft tissue disruption = leakage
Bone Scan (Diagnostic Test)
- invasive
- isotopes
- shows stress fractures, infections, and tumors
- can show with as little as 4-7% bone loss
Computed Tomography (Diagnostic Test)
- cross sectional images based on x-ray attenuation.
- diagnose spinal lesions and brain
Doppler Ultrasonography (Diagnostic Test)
- non-invasive
- ## evaluates blood flow in major veins, arteries, and cerebrovascular system.
