Parkinson's Flashcards
decrease in dopamine
parkinsons
resting tremor rigidity bradykinesia postural instability micrographia masked face slowing ADLs stooped, shuffling gait decreased arm swing when walking incoordination dementia
symptoms of parkinsons
slowness of movement
bradykinesia
difficulty initiating movement
moments of freezing may occur - sudden break or block in movement
deficit in preparatory phase of movement contol
akinesia
presents at rests and disappear with voluntary movement
early stages it is unilateral
resting tremor
resistance to passive motion
felt uniformly in muscles on both sides of joint and in movement in both directions
affects proximal muscles first then to face and extremities
rigidity
prolonged rigidity
contractures/postural deformity
gait deviations with parkinsons
flat footed/ toe heel progression
decreases the ability to step over obstacles or walk on carpeted surfaces
lack of extenstion in LE
multiple small steps as if pt is trying to catch up with center of gravity
festination
abnormally small handwriting that is difficult to read
micrographia
infrequent blinking (irritated eyes)
lack of expression
smiling possible on command with volitional effort
Masked face
Hoehn and yahr stage 1
minimal or absent; unilateral if present
Hoehn and yahr stage 2
minimal bilateral or midline involvement, balance not impaired
Hoehn and yahr stage 3
independent, bilateral , mild to moderate disability, balance deficits
Hoehn and yahr stage 4
severely disabling disease, walking possible with assistance
