Authoritarian

Fourth parenting style added to Baumrind’s original three styles
Uninvolved/neglectful
Style of parenting with strict rules and punishments, and a lack of explanations behind the rules
Authoritarian
Style of parenting with strict rules but explanations given for the rules and children are nurtured rather than punished
Authoritative
Style of parenting where children are rarely punished, and parents take the role of a friend to their children
Permissive/indulgent
Style of parenting where parents are little involved and make few demands of their children
Uninvolved/neglectful
Style of parenting that tends to lead to obedient, efficient children who have low self esteem and social competence
Authoritarian
Style of parenting which tends to lead to children who are happy, capable and successful
Authoritative
Style of parenting which tends to lead to children who are unhappy and have problems with authority figures, and who may behave in ways which causes aggression in others
Permissive/indulgent
Style of parenting which tends to lead to children who have the least self-control and are the least successful
Uninvolved/neglectful
Children of this birth order have on average more parental time, higher IQ and are more achievement driven and authoritarian
First born
Children of this birth order receive the least parental attention and have the strongest peer relationships on average
Middle born
Children of this birth order are the most ‘spoiled’ and are more independent and rebellious on average
Last born
Study which looked at familial factors predicting later life delinquency when the children were aged 8-10
