Mahler’s stage of development at which the child begins to explore connections with the external world and other people than their mother. Usually not happy playing at this phase unless the mother is in sight.
Practicing
Mahler’s stage of development at which the child has to resolve their desire to both be with their mother and have independence. Often leads to tantrums and transitional objects are used.
Rapprochement
Mahler’s stage of development at which the child has accepted object constancy and is happy to be separate from their mother for periods of time
