Papilloedema Flashcards
What does the term ‘Swollen optic discs’ mean?
disc swelling secondary to any other cause
What is papilloedema?
swollen optic disc secondary to raised intracranial pressure
What should always be presumed about bilateral optic disc swellings?
raised ICP due to a space occupying lesion (SOL)
How do you measure cranial nerve 2?
visual acuity
Pupil exam
Visual field assessment
Colour vision
What causes the discs to swell?
Interruption of the axoplasmic flow and venous congestion.
This is caused by increased subarachnoid pressure
What is the Monro-Kellie hypotheis?
increase in pone variant means decrease in one or both of the others
What are the functions of the CSF?
Maintain stable extracellular environment for the brain Buoyancy mechanical protection Waste removal Nutrition
Where is CSF produced?
lateral ventricles by choroid plexus
Where does CSF travel to?
Through the 3rd and 4th ventricles into the subarachnoid space
What can cause an increase of ICP?
Obstruction to CSF circulation
Overproduction of CSF
Inadequate absorption
What happens when disc swelling becomes chronic?
Discs become atrophic and pale.
Loss of visual occurs and blindness may result
