Abilities
Inherited from your parents, abilities are stable traits that determine an individual’s potential to learn a skill
Anabolic agents
Drugs that help athletes train harder and build muscle
Balanced diet
Eating the right amount for energy expended and eating different food types to provide suitable nutrients, vitamins and minerals
Barrier to participation
An obstacle that prevents a group within society from participating in sport or physical activity and therefore reduces overall levels of participation
Beta blockers
Drugs taken to calm the performer down by reducing the effects of adrenaline
Blood doping
Artificially increasing the number of red blood cells in the body
Carbohydrate
Food source that acts as the body’s preferred energy source
Closed skill
A skill which is not effected by the environment or performers within it. It tends to be done the same way each time
Commercialisation
The process by which a new product or service is introduced into the general market
Contract to compete
Agreeing to play by the rules, trying to win but also allowing your opponent to play
Deep breathing
A physical technique which involves the performer exaggerating their breaths in and out
Dehydration
A condition that occurs when the body loses more water than it takes in, interrupting the functioning of the body
Disability
A physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on a person’s ability to do normal daily activities, such as sport
Discrimination
The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different groups of people, especially on the grounds of race, disability, age or sex
Diuretics
Drugs that remove fluid from the body
Ectomorph
A somatotype characterised by being tall and thin with narrow shoulders and hips
Endomorph
A somatotype characterised by a pear-shaped body with high fat content, wide hips and narrow shoulders

A technique or substance used for the purpose of enhancing performance
Etiquette
The unwritten rules concerning player behaviour
Externally paced skill
The skill is started because of an external factor. The speed, the rate of pace of the skill in controlled by external factors e.g. an opponent

Feedback from an external source
Extrinsic motivation
The drive experienced by a performer when striving to achieve a reward (tangible or intangible)
Fat
Food source that provides energy at low intensities
Fitness
The ability to meet/cope with the demands of the environment
Gamesmanship
The use of dubious methods, that are not strictly illegal, to gain an advantage

The financial relationship between sport, sponsorship and media
