What can physical activity do to mental health and well-being?
Reduce stress/tension levels
Release feel good hormones e.g. serotonin
Enable a person to control their emotions and work productively

‘Basic human needs are being met (food, shelter and clothing). The individual has friendship and support, is socially active and has some value in society with little stress in social circumstances’
What can physical activity do to social health and well-being?
- provide opportunities to socialise/make friends
- encourage co-operation skills
- encourage team working skills
- ensure essential human needs are met

‘The ability to meet/cope with the demands of the environment’
Improvements in fitness will….
- make you feel more happy/content (increased well-being)
- reduce the chances of you suffering injuries
- improve your ability to cope with the demands of your environment
- make it easier for you to complete physical work e.g. work on feet all day

‘Having little, no or irregular physical activity’

Factors affecting how sedentary your life is
- job
- hobbies
- their environment
- who they spend their time with
- choices they make about how they spend their time
Possible consequences of a sedentary life:
- weight gain
- heart disease
- diabetes
- poor sleeping patterns
- poor self-esteem
- feeling tired
Consequence of having a sedentary life: OBESITY
- sitting down can lead to weight gain as little energy is used up
- people could get bored and eat more snacks
Consequence of sedentary lifestyle: POOR SLEEP
- not using up enough energy
