30 marks total:
A01- 10 marks (Apply appropriate methods of language analysis, using associated terminology and coherent written expression) (terminology?)
A02- 20 marks (Demonstrate critical understanding of concepts and issues relevant to language use) (theory)

1 Question is an area of language diversity, the other is always language change
(Language diversity = world Englishes, occupation, gender, ethnicity, accent and dialect)
(Book says the topics are- gender, regional varieties, social groups and occupation)

How to answer question 1/2

A

(45 mins writing)
Intro, 3 paragraphs + conclusion

Intro- introduce the argument, and briefly mention all the ideas that you might include in your debate
P1/2/3- idea for or against, discuss the question using theory and evidence, link back to question (evaluate theory if possible)
conc- sum up the argument, don’t make new points, make a justified judgment on the question

A03- 15 marks (Analyse and evaluate how contextual factors and language features are associated with the construction of meaning.)
A04- 15 marks (Explore connections across texts, informed by linguistic concepts and methods.)

Analyse how language is used in Text A and Text B to present views about (BLANK) In your answer you should:
• examine any similarities and differences you find between the two texts
• explore how effectively the texts present their views.

How to answer question 3

A

Plan(15 mins):
Read the texts through once to understand the ideas within them, and how they compare to each other
Read again, this time picking out the key messages (2-3 for each text)
Identify TAP (type audience purpose) + contextual factors
Highlight phrases/ words that exemplify these messages, and identify the technique they use
Make a plan out of these ideas, so that you can compare and contrast them within your writing

Language methods to look for in question 3

A

Semantic fields- group of words from the same field of knowledge (disease, war)
language metaphors(extended)-
pronouns- constant use of we, us, you
modal auxiliary verbs- a verb that indicates probability
interrogative/ imperatives- questioning/ commanding
sarcasm/humor
hyperbole/sensationalized language- general exaggeration
non- standard forms- writing in accents/ non-normal ways
rhetorical devices- used to convince the reader (rhetorical questions, allusion, anaphora)
relative clauses- a sub clause attached to a main clause (usually an explanation/clarification of what they just said)
