Main clause
A complete unit of meaning containing the noun and the verb
“The dog howled”
Dog= subject/noun Howled= verb
Subordinate clause
A subordinate clause will contain a subordinating conjunction, a subject and a verb
A subordinate clause can never stand alone as a complete sentence, so it must be attached to a main clause
“Because my dog loves pizza crusts”
Subordinate conjunction = because
Dog= subject
loves= verb
Relative clause
A relative clause begins with a relative pronoun (such as who, whom, which or that)
When he chew and drools with great enthusiasm
Where= relative adverb he= subject chews/drools= verb
Conditional clause
A conditional clause is one that usually begins with if or unless and describes something that is possible or probable
If it looks like rain, I will bring my coat to school
