1854 Britain and France declare war against Austria
Britain and France put pressure on piedmont to join the war

Cavour worried by Austria and that troops in Crimea were ravaged with cholera
However veII welcomed the pressure

Dec 1855 - singled between Austria Britain and France aimed at forcing Rusia to negotiate
Cavour agreed to send troops to Crimea
Jan 1855 - 15000 troops
Helped piedmont improve its status in europe
15000 Piedmontese troops arrived in Crimea

Fall of Sebastopol
16th august 1855 - Piedmontese army took part in victory against Russia
Russia sued for peace
Dec 1855 after Austria threatened to enter the war

Cavour’s attendance showed diplomatic statue
Neither Britain or France would alienate Austria and the ‘Italian question’ topic of discussion on 8th April
National society formed
1857- formed by exiles, e.g Daniel Manin, La Farina, palabrocino to spread nationalist propaganda
orsini affair
January 1858 - orsini + 3 others attempt to assassinate napoleon so that a republic would take over
At his trial orsini begged to help the Italian cause
Plombieres
July 1858- kingdom of Italy under the house of savoy
Kingdom of central Italy under Tuscany/ Papal States under the pope/ kingdom of Naples remains
In return for 20000 french troops, France get nice + savoy
Cavour promised to match with 100,000 troops
