boxer rebellion
1899 rebellion in beijing, china started by a secret society of chinese who opposed the “foreign devils”
CCP
chinese communist party, founded in 1921
founding and ruling political party of the people’s republic of china (october 1, 1949)
chaing kai-shek
leader of the nationalist party in 1928, after sun yat-sen’s death in 1925, he favored a capitalist state supported by a military dictatorship
chinese civil war
1927-1936- KMT vs CCP- KMT largely controlled the country, CCP stayed alive using guerrilla tactics and hiding up in the mountains
war between communist mao and nationalist chaing-kai shek
the communists took over and forced the nationalists to retreat to taiwan
first united front
an alliance between the CCP and the KMT
was brokered by the comintern and it lasted from 1923-1927
jiangxi soviet
experimental rural communist government led by mao

appointed as mao’s successor, but died in a plane crash in 1971 (scholars unsure if it was an accident or planned)
lin was accused of betraying mao, and some claimed he had planned a coup d’etat

small book of maoist thought (propaganda) used to make military, then students loyal to mao, important during cultural revolution
it was required reading in all schools
long march
1934-35
6,000-mile flight of chinese communists from southeastern to northwestern china
the communists, led by mao, were pursued by the chinese army under orders from chiang kai-shek
later important in propaganda
mao zedong
(1893-1976) leader of the CCP that overthrew chiang kai shek and the nationalists
established china as the people’s republic of china and ruled from 1949 until 1976
