Palate and Oral Cavity Flashcards
what are the landmarks/structures in the oral cavity?
hard palate
soft palate
palatopharyngeal arch
palatoglossal arch
uvula
palatine tonsil
what is a fauces?
area the houses the palatine tonsil
what are the muscles of the palate?
tensor veli palatini
levator veli palatini
palatoglossus
palatopharyngeus
what is a tonsillectomy and what cranial nerve could be injured during it?
removal of the tonsils
CN IX glossopharyngeal causing loss of taste and sensation to posterior 1/3 of the tongue
what cranial nerve gives taste and general sensation to the epiglottis?
CN X
where can popcorn husks get trapped?
valleculae
what are the muscles of the tongue?
mylohyoid
geniohyoid
genioglossus
what are the muscles of the floor of the mouth?
styloglossus
hyoglossus
stylohyoid
what is the main function of the styloglossus?
retraction (retrusion) and elevation of the tongue on the same side as the active muscle
(left muscle retracts tongue to the left)
what is the main function of the hyoglossus?
depresses the tongue
what is the main function of the genioglossus?
protrusion of the tongue to the opposite side of the active muscle
(right muscle will protrude muscle to the left)
what would happen if there is a lesion at the right hypoglossal nerve?
- tongue would be deviated to the left due to the unopposed styloglossal pull
- tongue would deviate to the right upon protrusion due to left genioglossal protrusion to the right
what are the nerves of the tongue?
lingual nerve (branch of V3)
hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)
what are the arteries of the tongue?
facial and lingual arteries
what does the submandibular ganglion hang off of and what pathway is it?
lingual nerve
parasympathetic for the sublingual and submandibular glands for secretomotor functions
