Anterior Neck Flashcards
what are the boundaries of the anterior neck?
sternocleidomastoid
border of the mandible
midline of neck
jugular notch
what cranial nerve inervates the platysma?
facial nerve CN VII
what vertebral level is the hyoid bone?
C3
what vertebral level is the superior thyroid notch ?
C4
what vertebral level is the cricoid cartilage?
C6
muscles and viscera of the neck are enclosed within three sheets of deep fascia which are?
investing, prevertebral and visceral
the viseral fascia can be divided into what?
pretracheal and buccopharyngeal
what forms the carotid sheath?
contributions from all three fasciae
what could the retropharyngeal space lead too?
potential highway for an infection to spread from head down into the mediastinum
the cutaneous branches of the cervical plexus innervate which dermatomes?
C2 C3 and C4
what spinal nerves make up the greater auricular nerve? transverse cervical? supraclavicular?
C2 C3
C2 C3
C3 C4
what are the sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve?
ophthalmic nerve (V1)
maxillary nerve (V2)
mandibular nerve (V3)
what are the infrahyoid (strap) muscles?
- thyrohyoid
- sternothyroid
- omohyoid
- sternohyoid
what is the ansa cervicalis?
a loop formed from C1-C3 ventral rami of the cervical plexus that provides motor innervation to the anterior neck of the strap muscles
what are the branches of the common carotid artery?
- internal carotid
- external carotid (facial, lingual, occipital, superior thyroid and superior laryngeal branches)
what branches come off the subclavian artery?
- thyrocervical trunk (inferior thyroid,
transverse cervical, suprascapular) - vertebral artery
- costocervical trunk
- internal thoracic
what connects the two lobes of the thyroid gland?
isthmus
what is thyroidectomy and what is a complication that may occur?
- removal of all or part of the thyroid gland
- accidental damaging of the recurrent laryngeal nerve when clamping the inferior thyroid artery
what is the path of lymphatic drainage for the head and neck?
-superior deep cervical nodes drain to the inferior deep cervical nodes and then to the thoracic duct
what CN is the superior laryngeal nerve a branch of?
vagus
