Pain (exam 4) Flashcards
define pain
an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage
what is hyperalgesia?
increased sensitivity to noxious stimulus
what is allodynia?
feeling of pain from non-noxious stimulus
referred pain
pain percieved outside area of injury
sensitization
increased responsiveness or decreased threshold of neurons, peripheral or central
ascending pain pathway:
1st order neuron-
2nd order neuron-
3rd order neuron-
1st order neuron- primary afferent fibers
2nd order neuron- spinothalamic tract
3rd order neuron- thalamocortical
a delta fibers
fast, sharp pain, how intense and where it is- get off the tack right under your right foot!
c fibers
slow, dull, burning, aching, can’t be localized
what specif type of pain stimulation do A delta trasmit
mechanical, thermal, low threshold
what specific type of pain do c fibers transmit
mechanical, thermal or chemical, high threshold
A delta takes what name in the deeper tissues?
G III
C fibers take what name in the deeper tissues
G IV
what neurotransmitter excites nocioceptive fibers?
glutamate
what is referred pain?
convergence of wide dynamic range neurons from all different places- they converge together and brain can’t tease out where they are coming from
what is the best way to control pain?
the opioid analgesic system, its the body’s natural system, releases neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine and GABA to inhibit pain pathways, do this via exercise, e-stim, meds, etc.
