Pain Flashcards
Explain the 2 types of nociceptive pain. What kind of drugs are effective?
Tissue damage
Somatic: skin, mucous membranes, muscle, fasciae, bones, tendons
Visceral: internal organs
Analgesics
Define Nociception and its 4 steps
Process that communicates tissue damage to the CNS
Transduction
-Noxious stimulus create action potential
Transmission
-bringing stimulus to CNS
Perception
-conscious awareness of pain involving multiple brain centers
Modulation
-body’s interpretation/response
Explain Neuropathic pain. What drugs does it respond to?
Damage to peripheral nerves or CNS
-numb, hot, shooting, stabbing, burning, electrical
-trauma, inflammation, diabetes, chemotherapy-induced
-may respond to adjuvant analgesics
Explain referred vs. radiating pain
Referred: location of pain reported is different from side of injury
(jaw pain with MI)
Radiating: pain travels outward from site
(left arm pain with MI)
