Both objective and subjective experience
- We have some pain everyday we dont pay attention too
- Hard to measure pain objectively though
- A protector and not a predictor of tissue health
What can affect pain and experiences?
- Context
- Culture
- Previous experiences of pain or similar pain
What types of pain is there?
- Chronic pain; doesnt decrease with time or treatment, can give psychological distress
- Acute pain; sudden injury
How many who seek care for pain develop chronic pain?
5-10%

- Alot of people
- 25% of the population has it. , more has experienced it
How does healthcare tackle chronic pain?
Often not good
- Failed to prevent it, chronic pain is complex and multi-faceted
- We need several perspectives on this area
- Too small effects with interventions, some improve and others dont
What are some interventions for chronic pain?
-Psychoeducation
- Stop listening too much
- Accept the pain
- Relaxation and mindfulness
- Goal setting
- Communication
Does psychological/multimodal interventions work?
