- thought to be linked to a type of viral infection along with environmental factors

metabolic bone disease involving abnormal osteoclastic and osteoblastic activity
- increased destruction of bone with unorganized reabsorption

spinal stenosis, facet athropathy, and possible spinal fracture

- drug therapy
- acetaminophen for pain
- calcitonin and etidronate disodium to limit osteoclastic activity
- biphosphonates or Pamidronate

- plain film imagine
- lab tests look for increased levels of serum alkaline phosphatase and urinary htdroxyproline
