P6.2.3 - Selective Breeding Flashcards
Why do humans use selective breeding?
To obtain an organism with a particular type of characteristics
Why do plant scientists selectively breed plants?
So plants with higher yields are produced so more food can be produced
What are the benefits of selective breeding?
It allows new organisms to obtain the best set of possible characteristics
Describe the process of selective breeding.
Identify the desirable characteristic. Obtain organisms that are high in this characteristic, and breed them. Continue doing this with the best possible organisms
What is wheat?
An important agricultural crop
State how selective breeding has benefitted wheat.
Larger ears and stronger stalks to help get them easier. Ripening occurs at the same time and they grow at the same height which makes farming them more efficient.
What are the negatives of selective breeding?
It reduces variation, so a disease could make the species extinct, and a disease could be passed on when breeding
