B4.1.2 - Abiotic And Biotic Factors Flashcards
What is a biotic factor?
A factor that is influenced by something that is living
What is an abiotic factor?
A factor that is influenced by something that is non-living / physical
Give an example of a biotic factor.
Number of squirrels
Give an example of an abiotic factor.
Rainfall
What is competition?
Organisms competing for factors
What do biotic factors refer to?
The interactions between living organisms in an ecosystem
How does light intensity affect communities?
The greater the light intensity, the greater the success of a plant
How does temperature affect communities?
Plants develop quicker in warmer temperatres due to metabolism, and warmth can also warm up cold-blooded animals
How does moisture level affect communities?
A lack of water will result in death as water is the main component in plasma
How does soil pH affect communities?
It affects the biological activity in soil and the availability of minerals. Some plants grow quicker under certain pHs.
What is an ectotherm?
A cold-blooded animal
Give an example of plants that grow well at a pH of below 7.
Rhododendrons and ferns
Give an example of plants that grow well at a pH of above 7.
Cucumbers and cauliflowers
