B4.1.3 - Competition And Interdependence Flashcards
What do plants and animals have to do if the resources around them are limited?
Compete against other animals for them
What is competition?
When an organism has to compete against another organism for a resource as it is limited
What usually happens to weaker competitors?
They die or leave the area
What do plants need to survive?
Light, water, space, carbon dioxide, minerals
What do animals need to survive?
Food, water, breeding partners, territory, water
What is population?
The number of species living in a designated area
What is competition’s effect on population?
If competition is high, the population will decrease and vice versa
What are ecological relationships?
The interactions between organisms
What is interdependence?
How different organisms depend on each other within an ecosystem
What are the three different types of ecological relationships?
Predation, mutualism and parasitism
What is predation?
The relationship between a predator and prey. The size of the predator’s population determines the population of the prey
What is mutualism?
A relationship where both organisms benefit from the relationship
What is parasitism?
Only one organism gains whilst the host suffers
