B6.1.4 - Increasing Biodiversity Flashcards
Name techniques used to increase the number of species in an area.
Conservation
Selective Breeding
Seed Banks
What is conservation?
Protecting a natural environment to ensure that habitats are not lost
What does protecting an organism’s habitat do to its survival rates?
It increases the survival rates
What has been designated to conserve wildlife?
Marine, aquatic and terrestrial nature reserves
What is controlled grazing?
Only allowing animals to graze for a selected period of time, so plants can recover
Give an example of restricting human access.
Preventing humans from trampling on plants
What does reintroduction of species do?
It adds new members of the species to an environment with a lack of species so they can reproduce
What is captive breeding?
Breeding animals in human-controlled environments
What do animals need for captive breeding?
A breeding partner Enough food Shelter Vet treatment No predators
What are the issues with captive breeding?
Hard for genetic diversity due to lack of breeding partners
Organisms may not be able to adapt to the wildlife after being released
What is the overall aim of captive breeding?
Create a stable population of species
Release them back into the wildlife
What is a seed bank?
A bank where seeds are planted so that plants cannot become extinct
How do seed banks prevent extinction?
The seed can grow if the species becomes extinct and can be planted again so it cannot become extinct
What are seed banks used for?
Conserving plants so new plants can be grown in the future
What is the Milennium Seed Bank Project?
An international project which is a backup for preventing extinction of plants by storing them and planting them in the future
