P5 Flashcards
What is the wavelength and frequency of gamma rays
highest frequency
Shortest wavelength
What is the wavelength and frequency of radio waves
Lowest frequency
longest wavelength
Explain the uses of radio waves
Used to transmit radio and terrestrial tv signals because radio waves can travel a long way before being absorbed . This allows us to send radio waves all around earth
Explain uses of microwaves
Used to heat up food because water molecules absorb microwaves causing food to heat up .
Also used to communicate with satellites in space because microwaves pass through the earths atmosphere without being reflected
Explain uses of infrared
Used in infrared cameras
used to Cook food in ovens because objects easily absorb infrared
used in heaters because infrared is easily absorbed by the surface of objects
Explain uses of Visible light
Used for communication using fibre optics - optical fibres are thin stands of glass and can carry a lot of information - used to carry telephone and cable Tv signals
Explain uses of ultraviolet
Used in energy efficient lightbulbs - carries more energy than visible light
Also used in sun tanning - however increases the risk of skin cancer
Explain uses of x rays
Used in medical scanning - x rays can be used to visualize broken bones . this is because x rays are very penetrative . also used in medical treatment
Explain uses of gamma rays
Used to detect cancers and in medical treatment
this is because gamma rays are very penetrative
Why do all EM waves travel at the same distance when emitted from sun
Because they all travel at the same speed in a vacuum
