P4 Flashcards
What direction do Longitudinal waves cause there particles to vibrate in ?
They cause the particles to vibrate parallel to the direction of the wave travel
What direction do Transverse waves cause there particles to vibrate in ?
They cause particles to vibrate perpendicular to the direction of the wave
what type of wave is a P-wave and what can it travel through?
P-waves are longitudinal waves and can travel through solids and liquids . They are faster than S-waves
What types of waves are S-waves and what can it travel through?
S-waves are transverse and can only travel through a solid . They are slower than P-waves
Explain why it is hard to tell when an earthquake will happen ?
Because it is hard to measure when the tectonic plates will collide . We cannot see deep inside the earth .
Describe uses for infrasound
monitoring earthquakes and volcanoes
used by animals to communicate
Describe uses for ultrasound
Foetal scanning
sonar
Compare using ultrasound and x rays for medical imaging ?
Ultrasound does not cause damage to healthy cells
Ultrasound is a non ionizing radiation
Ultrasound safer for consultant
3D imaging with ultrasound
X-rays produce higher resolution images
X-rays more suitable for bony structures
