P3 Human fieldwork Flashcards
state the human fieldwork enquiry
How effective has regeneration been at Salford Quays?
describe the aim of our human fieldwork enquiry
discover if money spent on redevelopment in Salford Quays affected the area socially, economically+ environmentally
describe why Salford Quays was a suitable location for our human enquiry
- was a derelict brownfield site which was regenerated to create a popular tourist attraction+ business area
- location was local/ nearby - only required a small amount of time to get there, data could be collected within a one day visit
- area is pedestrianised - safe
describe the risk assessment for human fieldwork (3)
- danger from strangers in general public: verbal abuse, abduction -> always in groups of 3-4
- busy roads: moving traffic, crossing roads -> only cross roads at pedestrian crossings
- deep water: falling in -> keep behind railings+ off pontoons
state the methods used in human fieldwork (5)
- questionnaire (social)
- environmental quality survey (environment)
- land use survey (economic)
- people count (social)
- field sketches/ photos (economic)
justify land use survey data collection method H
- recorded the different land uses on the land use map using a number key to categorise buildings
- land uses categorised according to the use of the ground floor
- allowed us to find the most common land use after regeneration
describe interpretation of land use survey H
- most common land use was residential buildings
evaluate effectiveness of land use survey data method collection H
/ simple+easy to identify land use as you walk past - efficient
X didn’t take into account multi-story buildings with multiple land uses, some buildings larger than others so could have more land uses
suggest improvements to land use survey data method collection H
- recording the modal type of land use for each building - accounts for multi-storey buildings
- counting a land use for each floor of buildings - considers sizes of multi-use buildings
evaluate effectiveness of land use survey data presentation techniques H
/ pie chart effective: easy to identify most common land use as this is the biggest portion of the chart
X land use map not effective: only allows us to show land uses of ground floor, difficult to identify most common land use
justify questionnaire data collection method H
- stratified, opportunistic random sampling - asked people (willing to be interviewed) 5 questions
- small sample size 10 people - limited time
- mostly closed questions w answers to choose from - efficient
- one open question - more detailed answers allow us to identify reasons
describe interpretation of questionnaire H
- desire line map shows most people travelled from Salford+ took under 1hr
- main purpose for travelling is for business/work
- mostly travelled by car/tram
- most visit daily
evaluate effectiveness of questionnaire data collection method H
/ closed questions effective as quick/easy to answer, small sample size 10ppl suited to limited time on the day, tally efficient as quick to record info
X used a tally so interviewees anonymous - unable to find correlations (between where people travelled from+ reasons for travelling), face-to-face interviews are time-consuming so only allows for small sample size
state improvements to questionnaire data collection method H
- use numbers rather than tally - able to distinguish between interviewees+ identify correlations (eg. if where people travelled from linked to reasons for travelling)
evaluate effectiveness of questionnaire data presentation technique H
desire line map
/ easy to identify where most people travelled from by size of arrows
X sphere of influence showed approximate travel time but not accurate
