3
Q

describe why Salford Quays was a suitable location for our human enquiry

A
  • was a derelict brownfield site which was regenerated to create a popular tourist attraction+ business area
  • location was local/ nearby - only required a small amount of time to get there, data could be collected within a one day visit
  • area is pedestrianised - safe

4
Q

describe the risk assessment for human fieldwork (3)

A
  • danger from strangers in general public: verbal abuse, abduction -> always in groups of 3-4
  • busy roads: moving traffic, crossing roads -> only cross roads at pedestrian crossings
  • deep water: falling in -> keep behind railings+ off pontoons

6
Q

justify land use survey data collection method H

A
  • recorded the different land uses on the land use map using a number key to categorise buildings
  • land uses categorised according to the use of the ground floor
  • allowed us to find the most common land use after regeneration

8
Q

evaluate effectiveness of land use survey data method collection H

A

/ simple+easy to identify land use as you walk past - efficient
X didn’t take into account multi-story buildings with multiple land uses, some buildings larger than others so could have more land uses

9
Q

suggest improvements to land use survey data method collection H

A
  • recording the modal type of land use for each building - accounts for multi-storey buildings
  • counting a land use for each floor of buildings - considers sizes of multi-use buildings

10
Q

evaluate effectiveness of land use survey data presentation techniques H

A

/ pie chart effective: easy to identify most common land use as this is the biggest portion of the chart
X land use map not effective: only allows us to show land uses of ground floor, difficult to identify most common land use

11
Q

justify questionnaire data collection method H

A
  • stratified, opportunistic random sampling - asked people (willing to be interviewed) 5 questions
  • small sample size 10 people - limited time
  • mostly closed questions w answers to choose from - efficient
  • one open question - more detailed answers allow us to identify reasons

12
Q

describe interpretation of questionnaire H

A
  • desire line map shows most people travelled from Salford+ took under 1hr
  • main purpose for travelling is for business/work
  • mostly travelled by car/tram
  • most visit daily

13
Q

evaluate effectiveness of questionnaire data collection method H

A

/ closed questions effective as quick/easy to answer, small sample size 10ppl suited to limited time on the day, tally efficient as quick to record info
X used a tally so interviewees anonymous - unable to find correlations (between where people travelled from+ reasons for travelling), face-to-face interviews are time-consuming so only allows for small sample size

14
Q

state improvements to questionnaire data collection method H

A
  • use numbers rather than tally - able to distinguish between interviewees+ identify correlations (eg. if where people travelled from linked to reasons for travelling)

Q

evaluate effectiveness of questionnaire data presentation technique H

A

desire line map
/ easy to identify where most people travelled from by size of arrows
X sphere of influence showed approximate travel time but not accurate

16
Q

justify pedestrian count data collection method H

A
  • used a tally - quick to record no. people if they walked past quickly
  • counted for exactly 5mins at designated times - unbiased results, comparable with other groups at other sites
  • performed at morning+ afternoon - data was representative of an entire day, unbiased
17
Q

describe interpretation of pedestrian count H

A
  • busy in city centre - near Lowry centres/ mall/ BBC offices
  • busiest at location N w/ a bus stop - many people coming off buses
  • busier in centre than outskirts
  • area has been effectively regenerated in some areas as centre is popular
18
Q

evaluate effectiveness of pedestrian count data collection method H

A

/ tally method is quick
X difficult to count as a group as pedestrians may be counted multiple times by diff members - inaccurate results, results relied on other groups (secondary data) so conclusion less valid, visited on a weekday (so less tourists would be there than on a weekend/ more workers there than on a weekend)

19
Q

suggest improvements to pedestrian count data collection method H

A
  • perform pedestrian count on a weekend as well as weekday to find trends
20
Q

evaluate effectiveness of pedestrian count data presentation techniques

A

table:
/ shows exact figures recorded which are reliable
X ineffective: difficult to identify areas with highest+lowest figures
isoline map:
/ effective visual representation - shows the pattern+ gradual change in popularity from centre to outskirts
