P2. Classification of Culture Media according to FUNCTION Flashcards
Classification according to Function/Use:
5
- general purpose media
- enriched culture media
- enrichment broth
- transport culture media
- selective & differential culture media
- contains BASIC NUTRITIONAL requirements for NON-FASTIDIOUS microorganims.
- used as BASE MEDIUM in the preparation of other culture media.
GENERAL PURPOSE.
examples of PRIMARY MEDIA:
- nutrient agar (NA)
- nutrient broth (NB)
- tryptic soy broth (TSB)
- tryptic soy agar (TSA)
same definition as BASIC MEDIA +
- they also contain additives, enriching substances, or supplements to support the growth of fastidious organisms
enriched culture media
- blood agar plates (BAP)
- chocolate agar plates (CAP)
- primary media used to support or favor the selective growth of pathogens in a specimen, such as stool or sputum.
- number of pathogens > number of normal flora
enrichment broth
primary isolation CM which maintains the viability of bacteria w/o allowing RAPID MULTIPLICATION if there is an anticipated delay in bringing the specimen collected
viability- ability to live
transport culture media
Favors the growth of the organism of interest using inhibitors added in the culture media
selective cm
contains color indicators as a result of product produced be a chemical reaction in the components of media such as glucose.
differential
