P1.2.2 - Energy and Temperature Flashcards
What does temperature tell you?
How hot or cold something is
What can you measure temperature with?
Temperature sensor / Thermometer
How many kelvins (K) are in -273 degrees Celsius?
0 kelvins
How many kelvins (K) are in 0 degrees Celsius?
273 kelvins
Where does energy transfer from and to when you heat up water?
From the chemical store of a fuel to the thermal store of the water
What is the difference between temperature and the energy in a thermal store?
Temperature tells you about the average kinetic energy of particles, while the energy in a thermal store is measured in joules and depends on the arrangement of particles and how fast they are moving
What can heating a substance do?
- Change the energy stored within the system to increase the temperature
- Produce a change of state
- Make chemical reactions occur
What type of change is a change of state?
Physical change
What properties do physical changes have?
They are easy to reverse, and do not form a new substance
What properties do chemical changes have?
They are almost impossible to reverse, and do form a new substance
