Q

relationship of O w temp

A

• Relationship with temp and currents
• Low temp water has more O2 - more saturated
High salinity = less oxygen

Q

how is O2 added using currents

A

• Vertical stratification can occur from restrictive water circulation from fjord - buildup in water sediment
• (low O2 levels, water column cant mix) can result in the summer
Winter = more turnover bc of more storms

Q

what is a fjord

A

Fjords are long, narrow, deep bodies of water along the coasts of formerly glaciated areas

Q

how is O2 consumption measured

A

O2 consumption is measured as mL O2/h/mg (or mL/unit time/ body mass of the organism- termed mass-specific O2 consumption rate)

Q

mass specific consumption - why do larger organisms consume more?

A

arger organisms consume more O2 than small of the same species
• However, mass specific O2 consumption is inversely related to body size
○ Why? Bc they have a decreased surface area to volume ratio
○ Larger cells = need a more efficient way to move O2 = more non-respiring mass = require less O2
○ Different activity/growth patterns
○ Limitations of respiration organs

Q

ex of species adapted to O2

A
weddell sea
increase arteries/veins vol
store O2 in myoglobin
increase RBC
decrease heart rate and O2 consumption
restrict peripheral circulation
increase O2 binding efficinency
do not increase lung capacity

Q

what is the bohr effect

A

hemoglobin releases O2 at high CO2 and low O2 levels

effect is used to lower the blood ph as an adaptation
