oxbow lakes and meanders Flashcards
How are meanders formed?
erosion and deposition
- lateral erison is more significant here because river is close to sea
on the outside of the bend ;lateral erosion forms a river cliff. on the inside of the bend the water flow is slower and deposition forms a slip off slope.
how are oxbow lakes fromed
the neck of the land within menders narrow over time on the outside bend. deposition will occur to cut off the orginal meander, leaving a oxbow lake
floodplains
when river floods, the water rapidly loses velocity as it spreads over the ;and so it deposits its load. forms a floodplain over time. lat erision on the out bend of mender help widen floodplain.
leves
heavistest load gets dropped first and gradually forms banks along side of the river
the river energy is reduced when it leaves the channel
layers of deposits build up in great thickness
