coast test 2 Flashcards
hydraulic action
when water goes into the cracks comprising the air causing the rocks to break
Abrasion
when rocks in the water hit against the bed rock erodes the cliff
Attrition
the rocks hitting against each other making smaller smoother more rounded over time
Solution
when minerals in rocks dissolve due to slightly acid sea water
what is the difference between erosion and weathering
Weathering is the breaking down of a rock in situ
Erison is the wearing away of rock often involving movement
Where does sediment on the beach come from:
cliff revision
How is a tombolo formed
spit develops where there is a sudden change in the shape of the coastline (1), such as at a headland/river estuary (1). Longshore drift deposits material away from the coastline and continues to do so in this direction leading to a spit. a tombolo is then formed when a spit connects the mainland to and island
What do you call a piece of land (solid rock) that just out in to the sea?
Headland
Name for the bend that form a spit?
Recurved lateral
Water moving up the beach?
Swash
What does LSD stand for?
Long shore drift
The reason why water moves straight back out to sea?
Gravity
Where does the sediment that forms spits come from?
Cliff erosion
Why does sediment get deposited in bays?
Lack of energy because headland absorb and refract wave energy
wave cut platform
The sea attacks the base of the cliff between the high and low water mark. Awave-cut notchis formed by erosional processes such as abrasion and hydraulic action. As the notch increases in size, the cliff becomes unstable and collapses, leading to the retreat of the cliff face. The backwash carries away the eroded material, leaving a wave-cut platform. The process repeats. The cliff continues to retreat.
