what are Favelas
Self-built illegal temporary housing on the edges of cities where people don’t own land. Often on marginal land which is unstable (e.g. hillsides/swamps). They are unplanned and so have very little infrastructure. Created by high levels of rural to urban migration.

SEEP
Social: low quality of life e.g. housing- poor materials, lack of access to healthcare and education, poor infrastructure and lack of access to amenities e.g. electricity/piped water/sewage systems
Economic: poverty, lack of jobs
Environmental: landslides, pollution, waste
Political: crime, corruption, very difficult to govern/organise/provide for.

what are the transport solution
Cable car- opportunity to access the central business centre (CBD). Cost = $133 million and will carry 30,000 people every day.
what are the housing solutions
DIY/Self-build program- to create more houses and replace the current houses with brick ones, the authorities provide the materials required.
what are the health solutions
Santa Marta favela is 13km from nearest hospital. Trained medical staff sent in with a kit that could test for and treat 20 different diseases. This has increased life expectancy and decreased infant mortality.
what are the crime solutions
Police Pacifying Units (UPPs) brought in 2013: A designated police force, to drive out drug gangs and reduce the high levels of crime (in some favelas like Complexo de Alamao the murder rate used to be 20/1000).

12 new sewage treatment plants built since 2004 to reduce pollution in Guanabara Bay.
what are the education solutions
A private university was opened in Rocinha and the Schools of Tomorrow Programme supports the opening and development of schools in high crime/impoverished favelas.
