what are Favelas

A

Self-built illegal temporary housing on the edges of cities where people don’t own land. Often on marginal land which is unstable (e.g. hillsides/swamps). They are unplanned and so have very little infrastructure. Created by high levels of rural to urban migration.

Political: crime, corruption, very difficult to govern/organise/provide for.
