Overview of the Nervous System Flashcards
Name the 4 glial cell types.
Ependymal Cells
Oligodendrites
Microglia
Astrocytes
What are ependymal cells?
ciliated cuboidal epithelium which lines ventricles
What are the 2 states of oligodenrites?
active - rouler + takes appearance of macrophages
resting - elongated nucleus
What are microglia?
similar to macrophages and act as a APC (clearing cell debris)
What are the different types of astrocytes found in the white and grey matter?
grey matter - protoplasmic astrocyte
white matter - fibrous astrocyte
What is the function of an astrocyte?
support in maintaining blood brain barrier
How can an astrocyte be identified?
star shaped
What is the function of oilgodendrities?
produce myelin in the CNS (insulation for schwann cells)
What does the hypothalamus do?
relayes sensory information
What is the lentiform nucleus?
Putafor and globules fallidus for basic movements
What does the cirgulate lenfiform do?
plays a large role in pain
Pineal gland function?
regulation of hormones
what does the telencephalon become?
cerebral hemispheres
what does the diencephalon become?
thalamus + hypothalamus
What does the mesencephalon become?
Midbrain, Pons and cerebelli
What does the myelencephalon become?
Medulla oblongata
What are the 4 main lobes of the cerebrum?
Occipital
Temporal
Parietal
Frontal
What are the 3 layers on top of the brain?
dura mater - tough layer
arachnoid mater - spaces for CFS
pia mater - v. thin + adherent to brain (follows dents)
Where does everything eventually drain into from the brain?
internal jugular foramen
What 2 arteries supply blood to the brain?
vertebral arteries
internal carotid arteries
