Other DNA viruses Flashcards
Hepatitis B (Hepadna)
“Enveloped: Yes
DNA structure: ds & partial circular
-has DNA-dependent DNA polymerase
-all hepatitis viruses: elevated ALT and AST, fever, jaundice”
“Transmission: parenteral (blood trans), sexual, maternal to fetal
Chronic carrier state. Vaccine. Incubation 6wks – 6 months: long. HCC risk.
Antigens: HbsAg - found on surface of HBV, indicates current HBV Inf.
Anti-HBs - Antibody to HBSAg, indicates immunity to hepB
HBcAg - Antigen associated with core of HBV
Anti- HBc - Antibody to HBcAg; IgM = acute/recent infection; IgG = prior exposure or chronic infection. Positive during window period
HBeAg - A second, different antigenic determinant in the HBV core.
HBeAg indicates active viral replication and therefore high transmissibility. ““Be”” Active
Anti-HBe - ab to E antigen, indicates low transmissibility”
Variola (Poxviridae)
“Enveloped: Yes
DNA structure: ds & linear
Complex capsule. Replicates in cytoplasm. Poxviridae.”
“Smallpox: Macules-papules-vessicles-pustules-crusts. Epidemics.
Has been eradicated
“
Vaccinia (Poxviridae)
“Enveloped: Yes
DNA structure: ds & linear
Complex capsule. Replicates in cytoplasm. Poxviridae.”
cowpox (Milkmaids blisters)
Molluscum contagiosum (Poxviridae)
“Enveloped: Yes
DNA structure: ds & linear
Complex capsule. Replicates in cytoplasm. Poxviridae.”
flesh-colored dome lesions with central dimple
Adenovirus (Adenoviridae)
“Enveloped: No
DNA structure: ds and linear”
“Conjunctivitis (nosocomial transmission from eye exams) Pneumonia.
““Adenofiber””: attaches via fiber from 12 vertices
Febrile pharyngitis: sore throat, acute hemorhagic colitis
“
Papillomavirus (Papoviridae)
“Enveloped:No
DNA structure:ds and circular
No encoded polymerase”
“Koilocytes = large multinucleated cells.
Condyloma accuminata=warts. Cervical cancer.
6,11: Genital warts
16, 18, 31: Cancer (HPV)
CIN: cervical intraepithelial neoplasia”
JC (Papoviridae)
“Enveloped: No
DNA structure: ds and circular
Polyoma”
“Progressive multifocal leukoencepahlopathy (demyelination) - in HIV
JC = junky cerebrum
BK = bad kidney
“
Parvovirus B19 (Polyoma)
“Enveloped: No
DNA structure: ss and linear (-)
smallest DNA virus”
Fifth’s disease=erythema infectiousum= slapped cheek rash. Arthritis is adults. Anemia. Aplastic crisis in patients with hemoglobinopathies (sickle cell).
